Americanism

   Americanism & Government Test

Each year American Legion  hosts the Americanism and Government Test Program.   Each sponsoring post grades the tests given at their local High Schools and selects the highest score from the boy and girl in the Sophomore, Junior, and Senior class to move on to the County level.  After the County Winners are selected, those winners move on to the District and then the Department level.  Department Winners receive a one week all expenses paid trip to Gettysburg, PA and Washington DC in the Spring.

Oratorical Contest

The Oratorical Contest presents participants with an academic speaking challenge that teaches important leadership qualities, the history of our nation's laws, the ability to think and speak clearly, and an understanding of the duties, responsibilities, rights and privileges of American citizenship.

The District winner of our Oratorical Contest for 2016 was Lucas Blanchong sponsored by Delta Post #373. It is most unfortunate for Lucas that he did not have any other contestants to compete against. The District Contest was no different than last year, we only had one contestant. Lucas Blanchong participated in the Department Oratorical Contest on Sunday March 20th Lucas did not win but he felt good about his speech and his performance. Lucas plans on participating again next year.

Educator of the Year

Our Educator for 2016 is Ms. Jennifer Burkholder from Evergreen Middle School, sponsored by Delta Post #373.

Eagle Scout of the Year

The First District Did not have any Eagle Scout nominations this year. We only had 5 Eagle Scout nominations submitted for the entire Department.

Buckeye Boys State

American Legion Buckeye Boys State is an eight-day hands-on experience in the operation of the Democratic form of government, the organization of political parties, and the relationship of one to the other in shaping Ohio government.

The above Americanism Programs are the "Picture Window" of The American Legion.  Conducting these Programs and recognizing the students and teachers for their efforts brings our Organization to the fore-front of other organizations and to the Community's attention and will help our Membership to grow.
